COPING WITH PRESSURE TO DRINK OR DO DRUGS

Tell your friends you're not into drinking and drugs - and tell them one at a time so you're not telling a whole crowd of them all at the same time. True friends will accept your decision.

If this doesn't work, try:
  • "I don't feel like it now"
  • "That junk makes me sick"
  • "That stuff makes me stupid"
  • "I can't get high right now . . . I REALLY want to pass this test, so I have to study"

The trick is to state your personal feelings. It's easier to stand up for what you believe if you know what you believe in, what's important to you, what you want. If you aren't sure about who you are and what you believe, it'll be harder to stand up to these pressures.

Stand your ground, even if some people give you a hard time. The consequences of going along with them could be harder than saying no.
