How to Volunteer
VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES AT TEEN TOUCH

TEEN TOUCH depends on volunteers to help run our Bingos, to help with fundraising activities, to help in the office, and to work on the Helpline.

Volunteering is a great way to give something back to the community, to get experience that can be used in a resume, to learn new skills or meet new people. Contact us for information or to apply.

HOW TO BECOME A TEEN TOUCH HELPLINER

TEEN TOUCH Helpliners are screened carefully. In addition to a screening interview with the TEEN TOUCH Coordinator of Volunteers and Training, they must agree to being screened through the police and the Child Abuse Registry. Personal references are checked carefully, too.

If a volunteer is accepted into the program, training begins. Over 30 hours of training are provided. The training is focused on improving the volunteers’ listening skills. Experts lecture about issues like suicide, abuse, drugs and alcohol, gangs, pregnancy, relationship problems, etc. Volunteers receive extensive training, through role plays of typical calls they might receive on the Helpline.

Because we guarantee 24-hour service 365 days a year, and because we believe volunteering at TEEN TOUCH is serious business, we want volunteers who are reliable and dependable. Volunteers are expected to make a one-year commitment to contribute about 12 hours a month to the helpline. One shift per month must be an overnighter—either from midnight to 7:00 a.m., or from 7:00 a.m. to noon. All other shifts (between noon and midnight) are four hours in length.

It is also essential that volunteers follow TEEN TOUCH policies and procedures in order to ensure smooth operation of the line. These issues will be discussed in the screening interview and will be referred to frequently during the training sessions.

If you would like to become a TEEN TOUCH volunteer or have any questions about the TEEN TOUCH service, please contact the TEEN TOUCH administrative office.

HOW TO SUPPORT TEEN TOUCH

We're TEEN TOUCH, a 24-hour province-wide non-profit telephone Helpline for young Manitobans. Since 1983, trained volunteers have helped callers find answers to the things they worry about. We use an effective problem-solving model that callers can adapt to any situation.

We have developed a website designed with three purposes in mind: (1) a self-help service which covers a range of topics; (2) an interactive on-line private problem-solving service; a discussion/survey forum.

As a matter of fact, some of the topics we currently discuss on our web site and some of the ones we plan to develop likely would relate to your business very well. We would be happy to include promotional material about your business as well as a link to your website should you wish to become a TEEN TOUCH sponsor.

Let's discuss how we can work together for Manitoba's youth.

Yours sincerely,
  Kelly Heape
